What do we do in class?
– We learn how to traditionally start and end a dance class.

– We explore the dance space, move like animals, walk like kings, dance like princesses or zoom through space like fairy tale characters.

– We find some great movements we enjoy! Then we repeat them over the next few classes and embellish them with different moods, mudras, expressions and sounds.

– We learn how to tell the world funny and wise stories from traditional Indian literature (Panchatantra, Janaka tales, folk tales, mythology…) and acquire basic storytelling skills in dance.

– While we move, we playfully acquire some basic elementary movements and rhythms from different Indian dance forms like Bharata Natyam, Kathak, Odissi or other Indian dance forms.

Classes for adults ( Workshop sessions tbc)

learn Indian contemporary dance moves
The concept for the classes is inspired by the work of masters in Indian modern dance like Uday Shankar, Tanushree Shankar, and many others.

We explore a blend of movements rooted in classical Indian dance forms like Bharata Natyam, Kathak, Odissi – and western (modern) contemporary dance.

move to different rhythms
Rhythm is the heart of Indian dance – and there are many different rhythms to try out in different paces – while moving to the music.

dance colourful stories
Indian dance has a phenomenal range of hand gestures (mudras), each with their own meanings, and facial expressions that add a further nuance to the mudra.

We use these tools as well as invent new ones, and also apply the entire body to enhance our message.
